First UK edition of what is perhaps the author's best-known book, arguing that as affluence becomes widespread, people will opt for leisure rather than consumption.The copy has the bookplate of Robert Skidelsky (1939-2026), a prominent British economic historian, and a member of the House of Lords from 1991. His three-volume biography of Keynes, published from 1983 to 2000, is regarded as the definitive study of the economist's life and work. Skidelsky published an obituary of Galbraith in The Independent on 1 May 2006, in which he called The Affluent Society "Galbraith's best book" and noted the similarities between the ideas of Galbraith and Keynes.The US edition was published earlier the same year.
