Original 1961 Russian-language softcover edition published in Brussels by Zhizn s Bogom. Approximately 22 cm tall, with 415 pages plus 8 unnumbered leaves of illustrated plates and portraits. Ocherki po istorii russkoi sviatosti (Очерки по истории русской святости), by Hieromonk Ioann (Ivan) Kologrivov, is a substantial study of Russian Christian sanctity and spiritual history. The work developed from lectures Kologrivov gave at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome and was intended to present the history and distinctive character of Russian spirituality to a Western audience. The book examines Russian hagiographic literature and its sources and traces traditions of Russian sainthood through major historical periods, including the pre-Mongol era, the period of the Tatar invasions, and later developments in Russian religious life. Figures discussed include Boris and Gleb, Sergius of Radonezh, Stephen of Perm, Nil Sorsky, Joseph of Volokolamsk, and other important saints and spiritual figures. A comparatively uncommon Russian émigré religious publication issued in Brussels during the Soviet period.
