First standalone edition of this defence of the author's primary economic text, responding to a critical review by Lord Brougham. Early in 1804, James Maitland (1759-1839) brought out his Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth, a somewhat unorthodox work of Smithian economics which anticipated Malthus in its concern over the level of aggregate demand.
