Eugene Onegin. First Nabokov edition: "arising out of the needs of his Russian literature students and serving also as a means of establishing his academic credentials" (Boyd, p. 13). Eugene Onegin was one of Nabokov's favourite novels, and his accompanying commentary to his translation "is a product of supreme intellectual and artistic maturity" (Irene Ronen, in Shapiro, p. 118).This set is in Juliar's second state as usual, without the red ribbon bookmarkers that were only "attached to an initial quantity of sets" before being abandoned. Juliar observes that "the only American set I have examined with the ribbons is a deposit copy in the Library of Congress". We have encountered only a couple of examples with the ribbons, one of which was the dedication copy inscribed by the author to his wife, Véra.Volume 4 reproduces in facsimile the source text of the 1837 last lifetime edition.
