Votes for Women. A Play in Three Acts. The copy of the women's suffrage campaigner Hugh Franklin, with his initials on the front wrapper. The cornerstone suffrage drama was commissioned by the actress Gertrude Kingston in 1906 and discusses the difficult interaction of the personal and political in the suffrage campaign. This is the second edition, following the first of 1907.Elizabeth Robins (1862-1952) was an actress herself, and the main character, Vida Levering, bears resemblance to the Ibsen characters she played, such as Hedda Gabler. The play was first performed in 1907 at the Court Theatre in Sloane Square, London. This second edition lists the character Beatrice Dunbarton as Jean Dunbarton, after the actress who played the character.Hugh Franklin (1889-1962) joined the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in 1909. He was imprisoned three times for his militant actions during the women's suffrage campaign, which included attacking Winston Churchill with a dog whip. He went on hunger strike each time he was incarcerated and was force-fed on multiple occasions. He later married the suffragette Elsie Duval.
