SUMMERING IN COLORADO. Published to promote tourism, this work contains images of Central City, Boulder Canyon, Clear Creek Canyon, Grand Crater, Rainbow Falls (Manitou), Monument Park and other landscape views in addition to an unusual group portrait. All the photographs are by John Collier of Denver. This work is usually found with from four to eight mounted photographs, although this copy has the rare full complement of fourteen. Unlike many Colorado pieces, the scenes are all over the state and not concentrated around Colorado Springs. Although the photographs in other copies we have handled show only landscape scenes, this particular copy has a group portrait of a camp scene with five men and a woman, two wagons and four horses.Scottish-born photographer John Collier (1837-1911) established one of the earliest photography studios in Central City, Colorado in 1871, and eventually developed a reputation as one of the state's preeminent pioneer photographers. Collier sold his studio in Central City in 1878 to further pursue his career in Denver, where he opened a new photography studio in 1878. A scarce copy of this book containing a contemporary group portrait in addition to the usual landscape views.
