London: Collins, Published for The Crime Club, 1932. [Crime Mysteries] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (190 x 130cm), pp.250; [6], adverts. Bound in the publisher's black cloth, with titles and 'The Crime Club' imprint blocked to the spine. A variant Collins binding in black cloth, usually found in orange cloth blocked in black. This may be a colonial binding. Contents and edges are clean, no inscriptions, small loss of paper to inside rear gutter, spine lettering completely faded/rubbed but the impression is legible. Miss Marple returns for a second outing in this collection of thirteen short mysteries, set around a sequence of social gatherings which include among the party the elderly detective, her nephew Raymond West, and soon-to-be-regular Marple sidekick Sir Henry Clithering. Though published after Murder at the Vicarage, the stories in this collection predate the story of the murder of Colonel Lucius Protheroe, and show the first stirrings of Miss Marples' genius - her constant comparisons between something that recently happened in the village and the case at hand begin to fade as her inestimable career continues.
