Published in Japan in 2003, this is a Japanese retrospective study of Aki Kaurismäki’s cinematic world, tracing his work from his early films through the beginning of the 2000s with photographs, essays, and extensive interviews. His deadpan dialogue, restrained atmosphere, dry humor, and irony created a world unlike anyone else’s. What makes this book especially fascinating are the interviews. Behind the films, Kaurismäki comes across as more pessimistic, uncompromising, and even slightly difficult than I imagined. That contrast makes his films feel even more intriguing.
