The White House Years: Mandate for Change. 1953-1956. First edition, inscribed by the 34th President on a presentation bookplate mounted on the verso of the front free endpaper: "For Mrs. Paul Carroll - with the affectionate regards of her friends Mamie and Ike Eisenhower".The recipient was Ruth Cooper Carroll (1909-1988), the widow of Paul T. Carroll. Eisenhower writes in his memoir: "To look after all communications of a top-secret character from or to the White House, I selected an outstanding young Army officer, Brigadier General Paul T. Carroll, who had served in World War II with distinction and been with me in the Pentagon and in SHAPE Headquarters in Paris... he handled, for me, communications of the utmost delicacy and importance" (page 117; the entry here sidelined in ink). Paul T. Carroll died of a heart attack in 1954, aged 43; Eisenhower presented Ruth with a cheque for $18,000 that Christmas, with contributions from 50 friends.Eisenhower's account of his first presidential term was followed by Waging Peace (1965), covering his second.
