First edition of these notes recording a year's worth of work by the founder of axiomatic set theory, the basis for a series of influential articles.In a varied academic development, Paul Bernays (1888-1977) studied physics with Max Planck and mathematics with Hermann Weyl. In the 1935-36 academic year, he was a visiting scholar at the IAS, where the faculty included Weyl, von Neumann, and Alonzo Church.Shortly after leaving the IAS, Bernays began a series of articles that built on von Neumann's work in logic and set theory: his decision to publish his theories of axiomatization were prompted by conversations with Church at the institute. Godel would later develop Bernays's ideas in his own work.
