Mohammed Aly Barrage. First and only edition of this collection of plans for the new Delta Barrage. This modern dam was built to replace the failing 19th-century structures commissioned under Muhammad Ali Pasha (1769-1849). It is scarce, with no copies listed on WorldCat.The first Delta Barrage, which was almost built from stones torn from the pyramids, was in dire condition by the early 20th century. Maintenance costs from plugging leaks were so large that it was decided to replace the structures entirely. Work on the new dam began in 1936, contracted under tender to the British engineering firm McDonald Gibbs & Co. at a cost of £2,750,000. Approximately half of the plans are from the hydraulic engineering specialists Coode, Wilson, Mitchell & Vaughan-Lee's 1935 submission. The remaining plans were submitted by specialist engineering companies.
