The Modern Farmers Guide. First edition of this comprehensive guide to mid-18th-century agriculture, a handsome production from the Foulis press. This copy includes well-preserved examples of the four illustrated plates depicting ploughs and other agricultural technology. Charles Varlo (c.1725-c.1795), a Yorkshire agriculturist, met George Washington and once attempted to claim the governorship of New Jersey. His Guide draws on his long personal experience of farming in England and Ireland, as well as his observations of American agriculture.This edition was produced by the Foulis brothers, whose partnership "marked the most significant period for Glasgow in publishing and printing during the eighteenth century" (ODNB). Foulis books are particularly renowned for the quality of their paper, typography, and book design.This copy is from the collection of the Rothamsted Experimental Station, a renowned agricultural research institute, with their 20th-century circular inkstamp on the front pastedown.
