The Shell: Five Hundred Million Years of Inspired Design by Hugh and Marguerite Stix and R. Tucker Abbott. Photographs by H. Landshoff. Published by Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1968. Desirable first printing featuring 82 hand-tipped full-color photographic plates, many protected by their original translucent tissue guards, along with extensive black-and-white photography. Later printings reproduced the color photographs directly on the pages, making the tipped-in construction a distinctive feature of the original issue. A beautifully produced large-format book examining seashells through natural history, art, design, symbolism, architecture, collecting, and malacology. The dramatic photographic presentation by H. Landshoff makes this as much a photography/design book as a reference work on shells. Condition *PLEASE READ* - Good vintage condition. No dust jacket. Blue cloth boards show shelf wear, including rubbing/fraying and some exposed board along the lower edge. Page edges show age toning with scattered spotting/light foxing. Very light foxing is present on some interior pages, primarily near the margins. Binding remains intact. The tipped-in color plates shown remain clean and vibrant, with many retaining their original translucent tissue guards. Please review photos for condition.
