London: Jonathan Cape,, 1964. Presentation copy to his girlfriend First edition, first impression, presentation copy of the last Bond book published during Fleming's lifetime, inscribed by the author to Sarah Dugdale: "To Dag from if". This is an intimate and close association. Fleming and Dugdale first met in 1952, when she accompanied their mutual friend Ivor Bryce to the New York dock to greet Fleming as he arrived aboard the Queen Mary. She became close with Fleming during the last 12 years of his life and he often concealed her identity behind a jocular or opaque inscription in the books he gifted her. This copy is in the first state, the copyright page not stating it was published in March. The film adaptation was released in 1967, starring Sean Connery and with the screenplay written by Roald Dahl. Octavo. Original black boards (Gilbert's binding A), spine lettered in silver, Japanese lettering on front cover in gilt, patterned endpapers. With dust jacket. Slight lean to spine, edges faintly foxed; jacket unclipped, lightly rubbed and foxed, else bright, couple of chips to foot of spine and folds: a very good copy in like jacket. Biondi & Pickard, 49; Gilbert A12a (1.1).
