Landmarks of Canadian Art Peter Mellen McClelland and Stewart Limited, Toronto 1978 First Edition, Limited Edition of 150 signed and numbered copies Fine in a Very Good Plus slipcase. A remarkably well-preserved copy of this massive production, with the quarter-leather binding, linen-covered boards, gilt lettering, maroon page edges and rich moiré endpapers all presenting beautifully. Binding is sound and square and the interior is clean and unmarked. The matching linen-covered slipcase shows light shelf wear and a few small marks but remains solid and attractive. Approximately 18 x 15 x 3 inches and exceptionally heavy. A lavishly produced oblong folio in quarter brown leather over natural linen boards, ruled and lettered in gilt, with two raised spine bands and maroon moiré endpapers. The limited issue was produced in only 150 signed and numbered copies and includes an original lithograph, Inuksuit, by Inuit artist Napachie Pootoogook. The book contains approximately 260 pages and 129 tipped-in color plates, presenting major works spanning roughly three thousand years of Canadian art. Its unusually elaborate construction, tipped-in plates and enormous scale make it as much a fine-press object as an art reference. Mellen conceived Landmarks of Canadian Art as a sweeping visual history bringing together celebrated works from prehistoric and Indigenous traditions through modern Canadian art.
