All Quiet on the Western Front. First US edition of Remarque's elegy to the generation that had been "destroyed by war, even though it might have escaped its shells". It sold 2.5 million copies in its first 18 months and was adapted into a critically acclaimed 1930 film, directed by Lewis Milestone.The novel first appeared in German in late 1928 as a serial in the Vossische Zeitung and was published in book form in January 1929. The English translation was first published in London in March 1929, preceding the US edition by three months.This is the first printing of the dust jacket, priced $2.50 on the front flap and with "First American Printing 100,000 Copies" on the rear flap.
