A Masque of Reason. First edition, trade issue, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Bill, from one of the oldest friends of him and all his works, Robert, Wesleyan, 26 March 1949". One of Frost's few dramatic works, the masque is a satirical "sequel" to the Book of Job."Bill" is perhaps William "Bill" Sloane (1906-1974), an editor at Henry Holt and later a writer of science fiction, who Frost met in the 1930s. Frost "took to this young man, a 'literary guy' and lover of the classics, and soon relied on his friendship, judgement, and fine literary taste" (Sergeant, p. 365).
