Like many Italian designers, Vico Magistretti (1920-2006) was an architect first, then turned to design. Even in the 50s he was looking for ways of combining classical elements of Modernism with a new sense of form. This led him down some unusual paths, which in the sixties attracted due attention. This was a period in which his most famous works like the ‘Carimate’ and ‘Selene’ armchairs appeared. Objects designed by Magistretti show the influence of the Bauhaus, but also a concern for solutions using new forms and combinations. The result is plain elegance of the kind often striven for, but rarely achieved.
