Black Man and White Ladyship. First edition, rare in commerce. Cunard published this pamphlet to address her relationship with the African-American jazz musician Henry Crowder, news of which scandalized the media - and her mother.Cunard was a committed civil rights activist whose relationship with Henry Crowder inspired her greatest work: Negro Anthology (1934), an "encyclopaedic introduction to the history, social and political conditions, and cultural achievements of the Black population throughout the world" (Gordon, p. 181). In this privately printed pamphlet, Cunard squares up to the racism that plagued her relationship with Crowder. She begins with a wry portrait of her mother's shallow and intolerant character, continues to freely air juicy details of upper-class hypocrisy, and finishes with a resounding diatribe against the idiocy and cruelty of racism.
