Born in Hungary and based in New York since the 1990s, Rita Ackermann developed a distinctive language through drawing and painting. This book collects works from 1993 to 1996, an important early period in her career. Her figures remind me of seeing an old doll at night: lifeless, yet somehow watching you. There is a strange coldness, as if they might suddenly move. Her work feels deeply personal and unlike anyone else’s. This copy is individually numbered 0429.
