Sir William Nicholson (1872-1949) was a painter and illustrator whose "natural sympathy with children produced work of great charm such as The Pirate Twins" (ODNB). He is perhaps best remembered as the illustrator of the Velveteen Rabbit.Maurice Sendak, author of Where The Wild Things Are, was heavily influenced by both Nicholson's books Clever Bill and The Pirate Twins, describing them as, "seemingly so simple they run through your fingers, you can't catch them fast enough".
