Cels for the book publication of "The Ugly Duckling" A near-complete group of original illustrations produced by the Disney Animation Studios for book publication of "The Ugly Ducking". As noted in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories (October 1997), "Early nitrate cels decompose under anything but ideal conditions and, as such, this Disney art is very rare today".Early books based on Disney's animated films suffered from artwork that was created by publishers and not the Walt Disney Animation Studio itself. In an effort to use more accurate representations of Disney films, it appears that the studio used their own artists to provide illustrations using the medium in which they usually worked: gouache on celluloid.The present group was created for Margaret Wise Brown's Little Pig's Picnic and Other Stories (Boston: D. C. Heath and Company, 1939). The title page notes "illustrated by The Walt Disney Studio", and "The Ugly Ducking" is one of ten stories in the volume. The Ugly Duckling was the last in the series of Disney's "Silly Symphonies" and won the 1940 Oscar for "Best Short Subject (Cartoon)". The series is recognized as the training-ground for Disney artists, developing use of colour, the multiplane camera, and sound. As such, the series led to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first animated feature film.The present group was featured in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories in October 1997.
