May French Sheldon (1848-1936), an energetic American, writes of the pioneering safari she led in 1891 from Mombasa to the Masai lands beyond Mount Kilimanjaro and back. 'Full of adventures and enormously (if unconsciously) entertaining.' (Robinson). The edition was published simultaneously in Boston and London (the Saxon Press). The illustrations are interesting showing a variety of domestic objects, costume, jewellery, etc. First edition; large 8vo (24 x 18.5 cm); frontispiece, map, 26 full-page illustrations, a little marginal creasing; later half calf, marbled boards, spine in six gilt compartments with gilt red morocco lettering piece, a very good copy; [viii], 435 pp. Robinson p 27.
