Living. First edition of the author's second novel, establishing his credentials as an experimental modernist. It follows the lives of Birmingham factory workers in the inter-war boom years and is known for its stylized prose.In the work, Green deliberately omits definite articles to reflect the Birmingham accent. He stated, "I wanted to make the book as taut and spare as possible, to fit the proletarian life I was leading" (quoted in Lodge, p. 122). His portrayal of the working classes "was felt by The Times Literary Supplement to introduce 'a whole new school of proletarian literature'" (ODNB).Loosely inserted is a newspaper clipping from 13 February 1974 listing the attendants of Green's memorial service. The writer and literary critic V. S. Pritchett (1900-97) spoke, beginning "there was Henry Yorke and there was Henry Green - two friends in one" (quoted in Hancock, p. 104).
