London: The Hogarth Press,, 1939. A Bloomsbury Group birthday party First edition, inscribed by the author to Roger Senhouse on the verso of the final page: "Oh if I were two years older. For Roger on his 50th birthday when its coming to me so soon. Henry 18/11/53". This copy is also signed by some other attendees of Senhouse's birthday party, including John Lehmann, his sister Helen Bradish-Ellames, and Adelaide Yorke, Green's wife. The Bloomsburyite Lehmann (1907-87) was the managing director of the Hogarth Press when Party Going was published. Senhouse's earlier ownership inscription, dated the year of publication, is on the front free endpaper. He has also pencilled personal observations at the front and back of the book. One reflection, dated 9 September 1940, comments on the feeling at the time: "the peak year for self-pity and the death-word was the year between Munich and the war and this was when Henry Green wrote his autobiography. He intended it as an epitaph". Senhouse refers to Green's Pack my Bag, the autobiography he wrote aged 35 in case he should die during military service. Educated at Eton and Oxford, Senhouse (1899-1970) was the co-owner of Secker & Warburg during the period it published George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Party Going was Green's first novel published by the Hogarth Press. It follows the events that take place in a large railway hotel after a group of wealthy people are stranded while embarking on a holiday in France. It
