First edition, signed limited issue, one of 24 copies with the inserted leaf signed by 17 of the contributors, including Graves, Thomas Hardy, John Galsworthy, Siegfried Sassoon, and John Masefield. "Published during an era from which the best remembered literary magazines were decidedly experimental and political in tone, Robert Graves's short-lived quarterly is notable for its purposeful conservatism" (Modernist Journals Project).The Owl was instigated and funded by Graves's father in law, William Nicholson, who drew the titular illustration. "They took advantage of the fact that Oxford and [their home] Boar's Hill placed them in the direct centre of a constellation of poets" (Presley).Along with those mentioned above, the signatures comprise those of Max Beerbohm, Nancy Nicholson, W. H. Davies, George Belcher, Pamela Bianco, Eric Kennington, Robert Nichols, W. J. Turner, William Orpen, L. Pearsall Smith, J. C. Squire, and W. Nicolson. Masefield, Orpen, Bianco, and Kennington's signatures are pasted in as issued.
