First edition, outlining the position that he would fully expound the following year in Progress and Poverty: that land should not be private property, and that poverty was caused by land monopolies. He addresses the post-1873 economic slump and "Long Depression" facing the United States, and proposes that private monopolization of natural resources was the primary cause.In this pamphlet, George "advocated the single tax as a method of relief. He took occasion at the same time to deny that the influx of Chinese, to which unemployment was popularly attributed, was the root cause of the lack of work" (Mills, p. 119). He also draws a link to the Irish Potato Famine: "It was the cursed system of land monopoly" (p. 6).
