A striking German photography book documenting the abandoned military complex at Wünsdorf near Zossen, south of Berlin. Photographer Sabine von Breunig spent two years photographing the restricted former Soviet military zone, recording decaying headquarters buildings, barracks, theaters, swimming facilities, officers’ quarters, communications installations, bunkers, kitchens, schools, guard posts and other remnants of one of Germany’s most historically layered military sites. Wünsdorf served successive German regimes beginning under Kaiser Wilhelm II, was greatly expanded by Nazi Germany, and became an important Wehrmacht command center during World War II. The Maybach I and Maybach II bunker complexes and the Zeppelin communications bunker formed part of the German military command infrastructure. After 1945 the Soviet armed forces occupied Wünsdorf, which became headquarters of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany and one of the largest Soviet military centers outside the USSR. Soviet forces finally withdrew in 1994, leaving behind an enormous complex that subsequently became famous as a modern “ghost city.” Von Breunig’s photographs explore this extraordinary accumulation of Imperial German, Nazi, World War II, Soviet and Cold War history through abandoned interiors and architecture.
