A fine powerful portrait of a proud successful warrior. Bodmer and Prince Maximilian were introduced to this member of the Arikara tribe by Mató-Tópe a Mandan chief in March 1834 whilst they overwintered at Fort Clark. Pachtüwa-Chtä had been a member of a war party that had attacked and killed three traders near the Heart River in 1830.
