This first edition ethnographic study of the Modoc Indians, who occupied the area east of the Cascade Mountains along the Oregon/Calfifornia border, was largely compiled from field research conducted in 1934, althouth the book was not published in 1962. It encompasses a wide range of the material and spiritual culture, civil society, child-raising, personal care, honored traditions and lifeways of the Modoc. Transcripts of personal statements and accounts, observations, and analysis of material objects are discussed by the author.
