Yi Nie Yuanzi wei shou de Beida xiao wenge jiujing shi shenme huose? ("What Kinds of Goods are Nie Yuanze and the Peking University Cultural Revolutionaries Peddling?"). A broadside attacking Nie Yuanzi (1921-2019), one of the seven signatories to the Cultural Revolution's very first big-character poster. Written on 25 May 1966 and personally endorsed by Mao, Nie's poster launched a wave of criticism on party and educational authorities across the country. It was one of the key moments in the first stage of the Cultural Revolution.By 1967, the student revolutionary movement had fractured, campuses and cities being gripped by bitter factional fighting, both physical and polemical. This broadside, issued by a rival to Nie's faction at Peking University, accuses her of suppressing the masses, thirsting for power, and following a capitalist line.After the Cultural Revolution, Nie became a scapegoat for many of the Cultural Revolution's early excesses and was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
