MODERNISM IN CHINA.

Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington

Founding issue of Yangzi jiang yuekan ("Yangtse Monthly"). The opening instalment of this short-lived literary and social affairs periodical, no issues of which are recorded institutionally. Founded in Hubei province, Yangtse Monthly is emblematic of the flourishing of cultural, democratic media in post-war China, even as the country descended into civil war. The spirit of openness and possibility found on its pages was rapidly extinguished in the following decade.Few traces of this kind of regional publication remain. Nothing is known about the editors, Chen Daichang and Jiang Yangwei (names that may be pseudonyms), and the date of the magazine's folding is similarly uncertain. There may have been no second issue.
