A Guidebook. First edition, first issue, of this attractive guide to Hong Kong, including a preface by Governor Sir Alexander Grantham. Later issues have "With the Compliments of the Hong Kong Government Information Services" printed at the foot of the front cover. As Grantham (in office 1947-57) writes, "the booklet's cover symbolises the Hong Kong story. The harbour is the basic origin of the Colony, on which its prosperity was founded; the fine modern buildings in the foreground are evidence of that prosperity, while the figure of the cheerful Chinese labourer typifies the hundreds of thousands who have been attracted to Hong Kong by the opportunities it affords and the promise that in reward for labour there will always be something for the rice bowl" (p. 3).
