"The French Attack on Tamsui." First appearance in print of this article on a key French defeat in the Sino-French War. According to the author (1848-1933), an expert on military fortification and a future colonial governor, the battle showed the folly of overestimating the naval power of fast-moving unarmoured cruisers. "Their utter inutility, when opposed to even moderate coast defences, will some day be demonstrated" (p. 28).
