Kuan-Hua: Tsan-Mei Shi ("Hymns in Romanized Official Mandarin Chinese"). First edition of this scarce Protestant missionary imprint, of which we have traced only one other copy, issued for the use of Westerners proselytizing in Yangzhou and across Jiangsu province. The text includes a corresponding English-language index of first lines.This volume was owned by James Markwick, a missionary with the China Inland Mission in Yangzhou, and has his Christmas Day 1878 ownership inscription on the front pastedown and title page. Markwick has made several annotations and marks internally, including a table of "corresponding numbers of hymns in this and the Ning-po hymn book." The China Inland Mission established a station in the region in the 1860s.Copies were issued bound in cloth or, in the case of the other known example (our stock number 187498), in the Chinese style with wrappers.
