Notices of Fuh-Chau, and the Other Open Ports of China: With Reference to Missionary Operations. First edition of this informative handbook to Fuzhou, the newest station of the Methodist Episcopal Mission, compiled for the use of recruits to the cause and for Sunday-school education back home.The text includes extracts from a report by the Royal Navy officer Captain Richard Collinson (1811-1883), who surveyed the Fujian coast after the First Opium War, and six chapters of material drawing on the writings of the British missionary George Smith, later the first bishop of Hong Kong.Provenance: Inscribed by Robert Samuel Maclay (1824-1907), one of the early American presbyterian missionaries in Fuzhou, "To Josefa Gabri from R.S.M. Fuh-chau, China, Dec. 25th 1849." As described in the preface, Maclay and a few others from the Methodist Episcopal Mission left New York for China on 15 October 1847. The recipient is untraced but was likely a member of the Dominican Order, which also had a presence in Fujian province.
