The Canton Chinese, or the American's Sojourn in the Celestial Empire. First edition, including a description of a visit to British Hong Kong only a couple of years after the Treaty of Nanking. The author (1823-1895) arrived in Canton in 1844 and stayed in China for several months.In Hong Kong, "scapegoats and scoundrels from the purlieus of London, creatures that only missed Botany Bay by good fortune, were to be found in the town of Victoria, lording it over the natives, many of whom were more respectable and respected than they had ever been or ever could be" (p. 257).
