First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Mr Larkins, not with antipathy but with sympathy, not with enmity but with amity, not with hostility but with hospitality, can nations understand and appreciate each other. Roy H. Akagi, Dairen, May 5 1936". The author went on to represent the South Manchurian Railway Company in New York.This history spans from early contact with the West through to the Japanese establishment of Manchukuo, although all but Chapter 1 concerns events after the arrival of Commodore Perry. A short biographical card on Akagi is loosely inserted.
