The Martyr Missionary: Or Five Years in China. First British edition of this biography of the American missionary William Aitchison, issued with different plates to the US edition of 1864. Born in Glasgow, Aitchison attended Yale and was then sent to Shanghai and Zhejiang. In 1859, he was appointed to interpret in American treaty negotiations with the Qing court but died on his way back from Beijing.This copy is perhaps a later issue. Others have advertisements dated 1866.
