His skill as a caricaturist evoked comparisons with the Punch cartoonist George Belcher. Here, he skewers nobles, naval officers, minstrels, and pirates alike.H. W. G. Hayter (1862-1915) lived in Shanghai from 1882 until shortly before his death. There, he drew cartoons for two of China's earliest illustrated periodicals, The Rattle and The Eastern Sketch. He held senior positions in the Shanghai Race Club and the Shanghai Country Club and produced memorable drawings of their members.
