Papers Relating to the Cocos-Keeling and Christmas Islands. C.-8367. First edition of this collection of correspondence covering the period 1885-96 and concerning the economy and daily life of the most isolated parts of the Straits Settlements. The papers are the work of British officials and naval officers who made occasional visits. Their reports were almost the sole source of information on the remote territories. Frequent reference is made to the Clunies-Ross family, which governed the Cocos-Keeling Islands as a private fiefdom for over 150 years until 1978.
