Inscribed copy of a later edition, inscribed by Roberts on the front free endpaper, "Presented to... for skill in rifle shooting at the Fourth Annual Allcomers Meeting of the Ulster Association of Miniature Rifle Clubs. By the Author, F.M. Lord Roberts. August 1914." The name of the recipient, one Joseph Boyce, has been added after the meeting in a different hand."Roberts was perhaps the ablest field commander since Wellington - quick to grasp a situation, bold and decisive in his solutions, and calm and confident in the face of difficulties" (ODNB). His memoir was a best-seller, going through eight editions or impressions within a month of publication.
