"Some Notes on the History and Folk Lore of Old Shanghai." First appearance in print of this article translating portions of a 40-volume Chinese gazetteer of Shanghai. The author served as a Methodist missionary in the city from 1875. This volume also includes contributions by the explorer Frank Kingdon-Ward, the naturalist Arthur de Carle Sowerby, and the art historian John C. Ferguson.
