Educator and Activist: My Life and Times in the Quest for Environmental Justice, Bunyan Bryant Jr. 2022 Rivertowns Books, hardcover with dust jacket. Very Good condition. Inscribed and signed by the author to a friend on the flyleaf. Bunyan Bryant Jr. was a founding figure of the environmental justice movement. In 1972 he became the first Black faculty member at the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability. In 1990 he organized the first Michigan Conference on Race and the Incidence of Environmental Hazards, work that directly led to the EPA's Work Group on Environmental Equity, and with colleague Paul Mohai he co-published Race and the Incidence of Environmental Hazards (1993), one of the founding scholarly texts linking race, class, and environmental harm. This memoir, published the year before his 2024 death, traces his path from a poor, unpaved-street neighborhood in Little Rock, Arkansas, to founding a field of academic study and federal policy. This copy is personally inscribed by Bryant on the flyleaf and signed “Bunyan.” Bryant died on March 28, 2024, in Ann Arbor. This is a small-press hardcover with a limited print run.
