A playful New York fashion catalogue in which the Austrian-Jewish émigré artist Lisl Weil's crisp white-and-blue ornament and lively folkloric figures transform Ernst Bloch's photographic plates into a miniature illustrated wardrobe. Lanz's dirndls, blouses, aprons, and accessories are presented as an idealised vision of Austrian folk culture, carefully repackaged for the American market.The catalogue belongs to the earliest phase of Weil's career in the United States. Born Ilse Elisabeth Weisz (1910-2006) in Vienna and later adopted by the merchant Isidor Weil, she studied at the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts and began publishing illustrations in Viennese periodicals while still young. Forced to leave Austria after the Anschluss because of her Jewish ancestry, she arrived in New York in 1939, where decorative work for Lanz of Salzburg was among her early commissions. She later became a prolific author and illustrator of children's books.
