The History of Greece. First editions of volumes 4 and 5, early quarto editions of the first three volumes. This handsome set is aptly decorated with greek key rolls. Mitford (1744-1827) succeeded Edward Gibbon as professor of ancient history at the Royal Academy. This, his principal work, was "on an unprecedently large scale. Previous treatments... had been moralistic compilations" (ODNB). The first three volumes were published in 1784, 1790, and 1796 respectively.
