American Neon Signs by Day & Night.
£750 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
In the mid-to-late 1970s, Toon Michiels, a Dutch graphic designer and photographer, made a series of road trips across the United States, during which he became increasingly drawn to the neon signs outside motels and restaurants along the highways. To him and to most Europeans, they symbolised romantic notions of freedom, automobile culture, and the wide-open spaces of the American West. Michiels photographed these signs systematically, first in daylight, then again from the same position at night. This promotional book was produced to showcase the work of Rosbeek, the renowned Dutch printers, and was distributed to existing and potential clients. First edition; (200 x 200 mm, folding pages open to 300 x 392 mm); 30 colour photographs printed in offset; spiral-bound colour illustrated card covers, upper cover folding, light handling marks, minor scratching to lower side, near-fine; [30]pp. incl. 14 folding.
