Schoolcraft was appointed agent for Indian affairs of the tribes around Lake Superior in 1821 and spent the next 30 years working closely with and studying North American Indians. In 1847 he was appointed special agent for the Office of Indian Affairs, to gather, collate, and edit information on all Indian tribes of the United States. This work outlines the basis of their enquiries, providing an insight into what was regarded valuable and interesting. It is divided into eight sections: history, tribal organization government, religion, manners customs, intellectual capacities and character of the race, present condition and future prospects, general history of the American tribes and language. It was also issued as an appendix to the author’s Historical and Statistical Information… Not in Field.
