TWO THOUSAND MILES ON AN AUTOMOBILE BEING A DESULTORY NARRATIVE OF A TRIP THROUGH NEW ENGLAND, NEW YORK, CANADA, AND THE WEST by "Chauffeur." Although the author (now identified as Arthur J. Eddy) never got farther than Ohio, this is usually described as the first book-length account of an automobile trip in the United States. The hazards encountered by the travelers were worse farther west. The work covers two trips, one in 1901 and the other 1902, taken in a Winton and Panhard motor car respectively. Eddy was later married to Lulu Durant, a cousin of General Motors founder William Durant. A scarce early piece of automobile writing.
