Thomas Arnold's celebrated History of Rome, together with the posthumously published History of the Later Roman Commonwealth. The works, written by the headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841, cover earliest Rome through to the reign of Augustus. Mixed editions; 5 vols, 8vo (22 x 15 cm); some very light spotting, gutter margin of vol. I stained at head and tail; uniformly bound in half navy calf over marbled paper boards by Potter Sons, York, spines lettered in gilt, contrasting red and brown lettering pieces, marbled edges, occasional marks and abrasions, else a very good set.
